Y Capital Campaign Receives an Extraordinary Gift

Introduces Community Leaders to Head Up Fundraising for Orleans Y

OTTAWA, 2 December 2009 – The National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA today announced receipt of an exceptional gift to its ongoing Strengthening the Heart of Our Community Capital Campaign.  The gifts were announced at a champagne breakfast celebration held this morning at the Ruddy Family Centre, previously known as the Orleans Y.

This generous donation is a legacy gift from long-time Y supporter and volunteer, Bill Marsh, who has dedicated his entire estate to the Y.  Mr. Marsh’s gift will be used for the creation of two new pools being installed at the Ruddy Family Centre, which is one of the projects under the Y’s $35 million redevelopment plan.  “The Y and aquatics have always been a part of my life” said Mr. Marsh.  “I am delighted that, for years to come, children will be learning to swim in pools I will have helped build.”  Mr. Marsh’s contribution will also be used to establish an endowment fund to ensure all children can enjoy aquatics regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

Heading up the fundraising efforts in Orleans will be local community leader Gerry Dust.  Mr. Dust is a well known figure in Orleans having been involved in numerous initiatives in the community including past work with the Y.  “I am honored to be taking on this challenge,” said Mr. Dust.  “The Y is a focal point of our community and this expansion will serve to meet the needs of all who live here, especially children, families and seniors.”  Mr. Dust will be chairing a committee of community leader volunteers who will be assembled in the coming days to approach individuals, local businesses and organizations to join in the $1million challenge.
